Oliver’s Perspective
I’ve always thought myself a proponent of any kind of harmony between human beings. This project over Asexual Awareness is no different. I do admit that at the beginning part of me thought this project was a little superfluous, as there was already tons of movements championing social equality for different sexual preferences. But after getting to know the subject and reading about what about what alot of the people who are asexual go through, my opinion slowly started to wake up to the gravity of the subject and what it means for people who are asexual. Not only that, but the incredibly hard work of my team mates Emily, Genevieve, and Maddie helped stress the importance of the idea in my eyes. Ultimately, I’m glad I took part in the project and I’m very happy with the result. Getting books in libraries in the schools across Austin is no small thing and it has a longevity that most other projects don’t necessarily have. By having these books there, hopefully it will help kids who are still unsure of their sexuality sort things out a little bit and ease the social pressure that can sometimes be put on people who are unsure. To be able to give that kind of comfort makes the entirety of the project worth it and more. The librarians too, have given us a lot of support with the project, buying the books we needed, provided space for the stands, connecting us with other librarians, it was all really crazy! And it’s exhilarating in a way, to be doing something that people enjoy so much, something that is good for people. On how we could’ve done things better, I think that more time would’ve given us an opportunity to get even more outreach, which would’ve been nice, but still , I’m content with what we did, in the time we had. On a more personal note, any insight into the world, knowledge gained about its inner workings and denizens is a joy to me, especially if this glimpse comes through a very unexpected facet. That is why I enjoyed this project very much and I couldn’t be happier to have undertaken it with the people that have made it happen.
